Specialist note

This charming genre painting, in which a lady is shown amusing a child with a toy pinwheel, was part of Hallé's contribution to the Salon of 1761, where it was exhibited with the title Un petit Tableau, d'une femme qui amuse son enfant avec un moulin à vent.

In Gabriel de Saint-Aubin's copy of the Salon livret (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale), the draughtsman made a marginal illustration of Hallé's painting in pen and ink, as well as correcting the descriptiion of its subject matter to read: Un petit Tableau, d'une dame qui amuse l'enfant d'une savoiarde avec un moulin à vent.

The painting was first owned by the eminent collector of modern French painting, Jean de Jullienne (1686-1766) and was engraved by Catherine Françoise Beauvarlet (1732-1769).
