Specialist note

Steinberg considered an attribution to Polidoro da Caravaggio, but this composition does not relate to any known one by Polidoro. He also considered Giuseppe Porta, il Salviati but Janos Scholz (inscription on the mount) thought it was probably Lombard, circa 1530.
