Giacinto Gigante (Italian, 1806-1876)
Peasants resting above the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius beyond
signed, inscribed and dated 'Gia. Gigante nap 1846' (lower left)
pencil and watercolour on paper
11¾ x 18¾ in. (29.8 x 47.7 cm.)

Note du spécialiste

In this watercolour, Gigante has captured his home town of Naples from the Posillopo - the rocky heights at the western end of the bay. Peasants are shown relaxing on a hill above the Bay of Naples, as Vesuvius lies gently dormant in the background.
