A PAIR OF GEORGE II PARCEL-GILT AND WALNUT MIRRORS

Each with a later rectangular plate within a moulded slip with re-entrant upper corners, within a leaf-moulded outer frame, above a shaped apron, the sides hung with foliage, the cresting centred with a shell issuing acanthus and surmounted by a scrolled broken pediment with eagle finial, refreshments to gilding, one backboard with ink inscription 'H..(?)ynon at Trewern (?)/Pembrook Shire', regessoed, regilt, the applied ornament and finial of later date

Specialist note

The inscription on the reverse may indicate that these mirrors once formed part of the furnishings at Trecwn, Llanstinan, Pembrokeshire. John Wesley described its location as 'one of the loveliest places in Great Britain'. The inscription may also refer to one Admiral Vaughan (d. 1789) who lived there (T. Lloyd, The Lost Houses of Wales, London, 1986, p. 70).
