THE COLLECTION OF LI HAITAO (YI LAN)
Li Haitao (1910-1982), sobriquet Yilan, was an avid collector of Chinese paintings and calligraphy. Born in Liao Yang, Liaoning Province, Li received his bachelor degree in Economics from Beiping University, Beijing in 1935, and then passed with honours in the third annual examination of higher education at the Nanjing Examination Centre. As an outstanding civil servant, he served in Henan and Shaanxi province between 1936-1946, later he became Chief Executive in Liaoning, Shaanxi Province after World War II. Li then returned to Liaoning and served as General Manager of Liaoning Provincial Bank, before following the Republic of China to Taiwan where he continued his civil services there after 1949.
Li had a great fondness for Chinese classical literature, poems and calligraphy. He began to collect Yu Youren calligraphic works and directly acquired them from the artist. The following eight works all bear dedications to the collector and were passed down to his son by descent.
