CIRCA 1835, PROBABLY ROCKINGHAM, RED PAINTED SIGNATURE AND TITLES TO REVERSE
Each painted in sepia tones by William Bailey, with scenes of sailing ships in estuary landscapes, the first entitled 'Sunset - View of the Clyde from Erskine Ferry', the second 'Sunset - View on the Welsh Coast', in scroll moulded gilt wood frames
The plaques approximately 6½ in. x 4¾ in. (16.5 cm. x 12.1 cm.) (2)

Specialist note

William Willis Bailey (born c. 1806) was one of the most notable artists employed at the Rockingham works. He is also known to have worked independently, decorating pieces outside the factory. For a specimen plate from a service for the Duke of Sussex, painted with the same Welsh seascape as that on one plaque in the current lot, and attributed to Bailey, see Rockingham 1745-1842, Alwyn and Angela Cox (Woodbridge, 2001), p. 238, col. pl. 73 (left), and p. 351 where reference to a plaque painted with The Clyde from Erskine Ferry is also made.
