Squat circular with domed cover, double flower finial, engraved with foliate scrollwork around vacant cartouches, base inscribed Presented by Queen Victoria to William Sterndale Bennett, June 1849, fluted spout, leaf-capped ribbed handle with ivory insulators

Specialist note

Sir William Sterndale Bennett (1816-75) was a composer of the Romantic school, admired by Mendelssohn and Schumann. He formed the Bach Society in 1849 in London which went on to produce and conduct the first English performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion in 1854.
