Believed to have been given directly to Miss Annabel Butterfield by the artist in the 1920s. Thence given as a gift to her goddaughter Mrs Cuddihay.

Specialist note

Meyerowitz was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and studied art in Berlin after the first World War where he developed an interest in the art of West Africa. In 1925 he moved to South Africa and settled in Cape Town where he established a reputation as a wood sculptor and taught at the Cape Town University and opened a school of art. His most famous work is the carved wood doors in the courtyard of the South African National Gallery in Cape Town.
