Note du spécialiste

Gillows of Lancaster record four 'pedestal portfolio stands' of this design but with glazed doors in their Estimate Sketch Books between January 1836 and June 1837 (ESB nos. 5073, 5106, 5109 and 5148). One, in rosewood, shares the dimensions of the present cabinet. Further evidence of Gillows' manufacture comes from the characteristically meticulous rosewood grain-painting of the hidden surfaces underneath the top.
