Specialist note
Gerard Dou (Dutch, 1613-1675) was the son of a glass artist and first learned to engrave and paint in this medium. He later became the pupil of Rembrandt in 1628. The inverse image of the woman with yarn, an oil on board, is recorded entering the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, circa 1768, Collection of Count Benzl, Brussels.
