mark of Horace Woodward & Co., circa 1880
centred by a polar bear and walrus on a rocky outcrop flanked by two spherical cut glass ink wells, the mounts with polar bear finials and the base with simulated rocky border, bearing inscription 'To Bailie & Mrs Pentland on the occasion of their Silver Wedding 7th February 1880 from J. P. ', the base engraved with design registration lozenge.
