signed Dancer, Manchester., double-frame construction, telescope fitting into left-hand side, silvered scale divided to 150° with vernier, 7 shades, ebony handle, in fitted mahogany case with accesories.

Specialist note

Almost all sextants were made for right-handed use; left-handed examples must have been made as special commissions. The present instrument, by the leading Manchester maker, must have been such a commission, and is an insteresting and important survival.
