Specialist note
Born in Medemblik in 1615 or 1624 Jan Abertisz. Rootius arrived in Amsterdam, where he became one of the pupils of Peter Lastman, who had been a teacher to Jan Lievens and Rembrandt. Rootius acquired a considerable reputation as a painter of portraits and still-lifes in his home town. His paintings today can be seen at the West-Fries Museum in Hoorn and in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
