Specialist note

Marcus Samuel, 1st Viscount Bearsted, who owned this portrait in the early 20th Century, was the founder of the Shell Transport and Trading Company, a precursor to Royal Dutch Shell. He acquired The Mote, near Maidstone, in Kent, which had been built to the designs of the architect Daniel Alexander between 1793 and 1800, from Charles Marsham, 4th Earl of Romney, in 1895.
