Noh Mask of Shinkaku
Edo period (17th-18th century)
Polychrome pigments and gesso over wood, eyes of gilt-metal
7¾in. (19.5cm.) long

Note du spécialiste

Veins bulge in the forehead of Shinkaku, his brow is furrowed and his eyes somewhat sunken. The mask is often worn to portray the troubled ghosts of peasant fishermen and hunters.
