Barnaba Agocchiari, called Barnaba da Modena (active Modena 1361-1383)

This characteristic small devotional work by the distinguished late fourteenth century Emilian master was known to Berenson from a photograph, which shows that the background had been overpainted, apparently in black. A comparable signed Madonna is in the Courtauld Institute, Lee Collection.
