George Stubbs, A.R.A. (Liverpool 1724-1806 London)

A touching portrait of what was no doubt a favourite hunter, this is a fine and characteristic example of the artist's work late in his career. The simplicity of the composition belies the deft treatment of elements such as the highlights on the animal's hoofs and the wonderfully freely-painted landscape.
