LATE 19TH CENTURY
Each top inlaid with rear central panel painted with a classical urn, the edge with fan design, painted with garlands of flowers, above a similarly decorated panelled frieze with slight breakfront, the sides with profile medallions of Apollo, Odysseus and other classical Greek figures, on turned tapering legs carved with palm leaves, on spirally-fluted feet

Specialist note

The design of these tables reflects the Victorian revival of the work of Sheraton, Seddon and other furniture makers and designers of the late 18th century, and the parallel development of the 'Adam' and Sheraton Revival style. The tables are of a scale and quality suggesting the involvement of one of the leading exponents of this style, such as Wright & Mansfield, Edwards & Roberts, Gillow of Lancaster and London, and Hindley & Wilkinson, examples of whose work are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Frances Collard, 'The Regency Revival', Regency Furniture, 1985, pp. 234-273; and Clive Wainwright, 'The Dark Ages of Art Revived', Connoisseur, June 1978, pp. 95-8).
