The rectangular plate in a panelled border interspersed with paterae, below a turned toprail with a central tablet and scrolled pediment, flanked by square spreading foliate-carved uprights, each with a brass candle-branch, on rectangular platforms joined by a turned baluster stretcher and with sunken castors, with Potbury and Sons, Ltd, Sidmouth depository label

Specialist note

The antique ornament of this magnificent palm-flowered cheval glass, enriched with Grecian black ribbons and tablets, evolved from that published in Thomas Hope's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807 (pl. XIV, figs. 3 and 4). Its robust character, in which 'the English style is carefully blended with Parisian taste' was described as the 'Modern' style in the The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1829 issued by the 'Upholsterer' Thomas King of Lincoln's Inn Fields.
