Specialist note
This armchair is a fine example of the transition from Louis XIV to early Louis XV. The straight, square form and high back, typical for Louis XIV, still dictate the form of the chair. Yet the change towards Louis XV can subtly be seen flowing into the design through the cabriole legs, slight curves in the arms and the disappearance of the stretcher. The upholstery, however, remains the main feature of the decoration.
