CASE:The naturalistic rocky case flanked by Cupid proffering solace to a classically-draped nymph emblematic of Love lost, the engine-moulded border above a broken bow-fronted plinth mounted with relief panels of playful putti, on engine-turned tapering toupie feet, one foot partially lacking, two later; DIAL: floral painted white enamel Arabic dial inscribed 'A PARIS', pierced and engraved hands; MOVEMENT: twin barrels movement with anchor escapement and pierced countwheel strike on bell (lacking); pendulum, winding key

Specialist note

This mantel clock, known as L'Oiseau Mort, relates to a design entitled La Douleur by François Vion in the Bibliothèque Doucet, Paris (H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, p. 247, fig. 4.6.9). The bas-reliefs of music-making putti are in the manner of Pierre-Philippe Thomire (d. 1843).

A mantel clock of identical model from the property of Paul Dutasta, was sold at Dusreuil Desvouges, Paris, 3-4 June 1926, lot 99, while a further model is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de La Pendule Française, Paris, 1997, p. 251, fig. C.
