Specialist note

Francis Newton Souza painted Birth in 1955, which may be considered the pinnacle of his entire oeuvre from this period. The present lot is a preparatory sketch for this painting, also executed in the same year. The artist fleshes out the protagonist and composition with fluid lines and spartan surroundings. This study gives an insight into the working process of the artist and how he negotiated and composed the overall composition.
