Specialist note
Therapia is now known in modern Turkish as Tarabya, and is a village on the western shore of the Bosphorus. Sultans and viziers built palaces here, and it was a favourite place of resort. During the 19th century, the British, French and Italians had their summer embassies there, equipped with magnificent gardens. In the foreground of Preziosi's picture are a little boat [sandal], a larger ferryboat with three oarsmen [kay?k] and cargo boats with sails [gemi].
