The glazed enamel dial with Roman numerals and signed 'PIERRE LE ROY A LA SOCIETE DES ARTS A PARIS', the later movement signed 'Bell & Son, London, 1862', the red-japanned panels probably original, the movement changed in England in the 19th Century

Pierre Le Roy (1717-1785), maître in 1737, juré in 1748.

Conceived in the 'pittoresque' style of the late 1740s, this elegant cartel clock was specifically made for a bedroom, to be hung in a lit d'alcove. It does not strike at the hours or quarters, but would have been originally fitted with a special striking mechanism activated by a small pull. The following lot in the North Mymms sale was a very similar example of this model signed ESTIENNE LE NOIR PARIS.

A virtually identical cartel clock with red-japanned panels and struck with the C couronné poinçon, the movement also signed Pierre Le Roy, was sold from the collection of the late Lt.-Col. J.C. Dundas, DSO, DL, JP, Christie's London, 13 July 1967, lot 221.
