with Ehrich Gallery, New York; sale 21 March 1906, lot 47, where purchased by
John D. Crimmins; his sale, Anderson Galleries, 15 March 1918, no. 32, to Ehrich Gallery, New York, by 1921, when purchased by Arthur Milton Huntington, New York.

Specialist note

The tentative identification of the sitter in the present portrait as Cardinal (later Prince) Maurice of Savoy (1593-1657) is based on favorable comparisons to his likeness in the group portrait, presumably by Jan Kraeck, known as Giovanni Caracca, in the Pinacoteca in Turin and in later portraits.
