Each with rectangular padded back, the arms and seat covered in rasberry pink, white, yellow and blue silk, the toprail carved with stiff-leaf and flower-heads and surmounted by pine cones, the back flanked by Ionic columns, the arms with acanthus terminals and supported by pearled supports, the seatrail carved with basketwork and spirally-fluted beaded legs with flower collars and bun feet

These beautiful and richly-carved fauteuils are directly based on the suite of seat-furniture supplied in 1787 to Marie-Antoinette's Cabinet Interieur at the Château de St. Cloud, which had been purchased for the Queen two years earlier. The suite is among the finest and most costly examples of Royal seat-furniture produced in the late 1780s and took six months to produce. Several parties were involved and the suite comprised 'a canapé, two bergeres, two fauteuils a la Reine, two fauteuils en cabriolet, a tabouret, a tabouret de pied, a large folding screen and a firescreen'. Claude Sené is listed as 'l'auteur des bois' ie chair-maker; Hauré was responsible for the carving and was aided by Regnier, Guerin and Vallois; Chatard finally gilded the chairs and received the largest payment. The suite was covered by Capin in blue and white damask 'brodé en chenette blanche' (P. Verlet, 'Le Mobilier Royal Francais', Paris, 1990 (2nd ed.), pp. 107-112, no. 38).
