Specialist note

Rachel Dickson and Sarah MacDougall describe the present work as a 'stylishly elongated' portrait of Bessie, the artist's wife, in which Wolmark 'employs an art deco-like spikiness that even extends to the rendering of the dog' (op. cit., p. 41).
