Specialist note
This distinctive serpent-form daybed was almost certainly supplied by the celebrated Parisian tastemaker and interior designer Madeleine Castaing. She owned a pair of early 19th century versions of this form and was so delighted by the model that she had copies made for her clients. The period examples, described as North European, were sold from her collection, Sotheby's, Paris, 30 September-1 October 2004, lot 201.
