In the Persian taste, each of baluster form, flanked by flattened upright handles centering butterfly medallions, painted and slip decorated allover with birds and butterflies perched and flying among blooming branches, their wings highlighted with gilt foil, ogival lappet panels at the rim, shoulder and foot

Specialist note

For another vase signed C. Roger with similar enameling attributed to Milet, see Christie's, New York, 25 October 2005, lot 189. Optat Milet, a French ceramic modeller and decorator was employed at the Sèvres factory (1862-79). He established his own studio in 1875 or 1877. He was known for his experimental glazes including titanium yellow and crystalline.
