Specialist note
Solon's Illustrated Journal records the present pair as worked on between the 11th of November and the 11th of December 1878. The margin records a minimum of 43 days of combined labor 'Paire de vases fo(nd) noir Semeuse & Moissoneuse.'
It is highly likely that the present pair of vases was exhibited at the Paris Universelle Exposition of 1878. Seventeen examples of Solon's work are recorded as being present, including three other pair of vases of this form and coloration all in the Pompeian style. On the strength of the display, Minton was awarded the Grand Prize, winning great acclaim for the factory and for Solon as an individual artist.
For one of the related pairs, see Mintons pâte-sur-pâte from a Distinguished Private Collection, Christie's, New York, 21 October 2008, lot 7; for a second pair, see J. Jones, Minton, The First Two Hundred Years of Design & Production, Shrewsbury, 1993, p. 93; and for a third pair, see E. Aslin and P. Atterbury, Minton 1798-1910, Exhibition August - October 1976, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, 1976, p. 73, pl. 58, catalogue ref. K3.
