Of baluster form decorated in the Pompeian style, the trumpet neck flanked by gilt and platinum enriched rope-twist handles with bearded Bacchic head terminals, each body finely painted and hand-tooled in white slip with a scantily clad classical maiden assisted by two putti, one depicting the companions, including one with bat wings, sowing seed from shoulder slung sacks; the other depicting the companions harvesting wheat, the central maiden gathering grain in an open basket as the putti wield large scythes, the corresponding reverse decorated with a winged putto peering out between a cluster of seeds or eggs among foliage; or with a putto in flight arranging paired cornucopia issuing either fruit and birds or snakes and bats

Specialist note

Solon's Illustrated Journal records the present pair as worked on between the 11th of November and the 11th of December 1878. The margin records a minimum of 43 days of combined labor 'Paire de vases fo(nd) noir Semeuse & Moissoneuse.'

It is highly likely that the present pair of vases was exhibited at the Paris Universelle Exposition of 1878. Seventeen examples of Solon's work are recorded as being present, including three other pair of vases of this form and coloration all in the Pompeian style. On the strength of the display, Minton was awarded the Grand Prize, winning great acclaim for the factory and for Solon as an individual artist.
