Painted towards the end of Reynolds' life, Lady Smyth [or Smith] and her Children was commissioned in 1787 and was well received at the Royal Academy of that year. The original oil on canvas was sold by Christie's, London, 23 March 1878, lot 40. It is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
