A Porcelain Platter from the Yacht Service
By the Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, period of Catherine II
Oval, the center painted with six foliate swags framing a stylized gold and purple cartouche enclosing a black double-headed eagle with a wreath of victory in one claw and the crossed anchor flag of the merchant marine in the other, the border decorated with blue, red, purple and green foliate arabesques and medallions, marked under base with underglaze blue factory mark
14 in. (35.5 cm.) wide

Specialist note

This service was probably commissioned by Catherine II in 1787 as the first of the Imperial yacht services. It is possible the service was commissioned for Catherine's tour of the Crimea in 1787, organized by Grigorii Potemkin, governor general of that province, annexed in 1783.
The Yacht Service is closely related to the Arabesque Service and may have been used as an addition to that service. For additional pieces from this service see N.
