Suspending a lapis lazuli drop, joined by a gold and platinum florette and shield-shaped lapis lazuli double link, from an oval-shaped cabochon lapis lazuli, swinging within a gold and platinum florette surround, the neckchain designed as a fine platinum link double chain, spaced by oval-shaped cabochon lapis lazuli, flanked by gold and platinum florettes, mounted in platinum and gold, circa 1915, 17 ins.

Louis Comfort Tiffany was a Renaissance man and a pioneer of American jewelry design. Known primarily for his "hand-wrought" style in the tradition of the Arts and Crafts movement, he continually challenged the American ideal of beauty with unusual color palettes, exoticism, naturalism and light. Primary consideration was with how a gemstone, given its ability to diffuse and transform light, could convey the design and feeling he was trying to achieve. The incorporation of lapis lazuli, which is dense and opaque, can be seen as a continuation of his pioneering work in glass, lamps and windows. The theme of light and color, not unlike the Impressionist painters that influenced him, was a common thread in every aspect of his oeuvre.
