The nymph holding drapery whilst standing next to a tree-trunk, the putto to her right, seated on a cloud, on a circular base inscribed AUGUSTE MOREAU; on a parcel-gilt and grey painted fluted column with husk-draped swags and oak leaves, on a cushion-molded base

Specialist note

Born in Paris in 1855, Auguste Moreau (d. 1919) studied under his father, the sculptor Mathurin Moreau, Aimé Millet, A. Dumont and J. Thomas. He exhibited at the Salon where he won a third class medal in 1877. He was awarded a Bronze Medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. He specialized in allegorical and classical figures such as the present group.
