CASE: the tripod on circular stepped base with scroll, crescent moon and star engraved centre, semi-circular glazed aneroid barometer with silvered register scale with Turkish inscription 'Weather Scale', blued steel hand, silvered scale to mercury thermometer (removed -- refer to department), spring-loaded pendulum securing block DIAL: 6 in. diameter silvered and painted dial with conforming engraving, subsidiary seconds to the centre, blued steel hands, extension below for off-set winding and signed 'THOS COLE LONDON' MOVEMENT: split triangular plates, single going barrel, Vulliamy-type dead beat escapement, back plate with conforming stamped signature and punch-numbered '1065/33'; replaced pendulum, winding key

Specialist note

J. B. Hawkins (Thomas Cole & Victorian Clockmaking, Sydney, 1975) suggests Thomas Cole (1800-1864) made approximately 75 tripod clocks (p. 36) and illustrates comparable examples with barometer/thermometer arrangements to the base (items 37 and 40). Similar long duration versions have been sold Christie's London, the Ellerslie house Collection, 24 May 2001, lot 88, clock 1317/37 (£16,450) and anonymous sale, 12 December 2001, lot 176, clock 840/8 (£19,975). This clock would have had a pendulum with spherical bob. Its number suggests it was No. 1065 in Cole's series and the 33rd clock of its type. See also lot 185.
