Specialist note
The present candelabra relate to a pair executed by Pierre-Philippe Thomire circa 1810 and sold Christie's, New York, 1 November 1990, lot 56 ($82,500 with premium), while a further related pair with classically-dressed maidens with hands reaching to a baluster shaft issuing swan-shaped branches, was supplied in 1807 by Claude Galle for the chambre de l'Impératrice at Fontainebleau and is illustrated in J.P. Samoyault Pendules et bronzes d'ameublement entrés sous le Premier Empire, Paris, 1989, p.157, fig.135.
