A SOUTH GERMAN GILTWOOD MIRROR
17TH CENTURY
The rectangular bevelled plate within an elaborately-carved and pierced shell and acanthus surround, further adorned with husk trails and surmounted by a seated putto and a crowned double-headed eagle, probably conceived as a picture frame
84 x 60½ in. (213.5 x 153.5 cm.)

By family tradition Altes Schloss, Stuttgart, until the early 20th century when presented by King Wilhem II of Württemberg to the present owner's grandfather.

Specialist note

A giltwood mirror of smaller proportions but similarly carved with profusely scrolling acanthus and headed by a crowned double-headed eagle is in the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec, Czech Republic (ill. H. Kreisel et al., Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1968, cat. 678).
