The base signed E. Peynot, the front of the base inscribed in Arabic Albayaa Altunisi (Tunisian Merchant) and the reverse of the base with foundry inscription E. Tassel. Fondeur

Specialist note

While capturing a moment of contemplative tranquility, Peynot's Marchand tunisien also exudes a sense of strength, power and dignity. The present lot was a great commercial success following its exhibition at the Salon of 1883, and was regarded as a requirement for all major Orientalist collections of the time.
