Specialist note
This exquisite small casket is very similar to two caskets in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Both are attributed to Vizagapatam and dated circa 1720-1730. One with its fine silver mounts is very close in conception to the present lot. (cf. A. Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon: A Catalogue of the Collections in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum. London, V&A Publications, 2001, p. 416, pl. 34.)
