Specialist note
The most popular of Mêne's racing studies, this group also known as Vainqueur du Derby is thought to represent the 1862 Derby Winner Caractacus. The wax model was exhibited at the Salon in 1863, with a bronze version following a year later. Listed as number 16 in the sculptor's catalogue under the simple title Jockey ©a cheval, the model was edited in two sizes, the present cast being an example of the larger version.
