CIRCA 1740, THE ORIGINAL CIRCULAR TOP RE-SHAPED WHEN THE EARLIER NEEDLEWORK WAS APPLIED
The oval top with an earlier panel of gros and petit-point polychrome silk and wool needlework depicting monkeys holding flowers, teacups, saucers, caddies, spoons, sugar-nips and other utensils within a foliate border, dated 1716X/EW & EIE, on baluster shaft and cabriole legs, the catch replaced
28¾ in. (73 cm.) high; 35 in. (89 cm.) wide; 27½ in. (70 cm.) deep

Sir Philip Sassoon, Bt., Trent Park, Hertfordshire, recorded in the Large Drawing Room in 1939;

Specialist note

Such needlwork tripod tables are rare survivals. A similar walnut example from the collection of Sir Harold Wernher was exhibited in 'The Age of Walnut', Exhibition Catalogue, 1932, pp.43-44. A related table with canted rectangular top was exhibited by Phillips of Hitchin Ltd. at the Grosvenor House Fair, 1977 and illustrated in Connoisseur, 1977.
