Specialist note

According to the artist's records, this portrait of George Washington is a later study of Gilbert Stuart's famous rendering of the President. Charles B. Lawrence, a New Jersey artist, moved to Philadelphia in the 1820s to study under Stuart. In a letter written by Lawrence now in the records of the New Jersey Historical Society, the artist explains that he borrowed his teacher's portrait of Washington in 1824 to complete this study.
