The border reserved and painted en grisaille with flower sprigs within gilt lines, comprising:
Two circular platters
Two oblong octagonal sauce-tureens and covers on fixed stands
One circular butter-tub and cover on fixed stand
Twenty circular pots-à-jus or custard-cups and covers
Thirty dinner plates
Twenty small soup plates
Two fruit coolers, covers and one liner
Two pierced fruit baskets on footed socles

Mahlon Dickerson, 'Ferromonte', near Succasunna, New Jersey.

Specialist note

Born in 1770, Mahlon Dickerson served as governor of New Jersey 1815-1817. He subsequently represented New Jersey in the Senate and served as Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. The present service is documented as having been used by Dickerson when he entertained President Martin van Buren (president 1837-1841) and the rest of his cabinet at Dickerson's home, 'Ferromonte', near Succasunna, New Jersey.
