A QUEEN ANNE FIGURED MAPLE DRESSING TABLE

Made of figured maple, with an elaborately carved skirt and bold trifid feet, this dressing table illustrates the regional preferences of Philadelphia and its environs during the middle of the eighteenth century. The top drawer bears a plaque listing members of the Cooper family, marriage dates and spouses. These names and dates coincide with those of the Cooper family of Haddonfield, New Jersey, a prominent Quaker family with close ties to Philadelphia and the dressing table and the tall chest in the previous lot may have been made upon the marriage of James Cooper (1720-1789) and Mary Jessup (1737/8-1794) in 1764, the first names listed on the plaque.
