Specialist note
The print of George II was adapted from a painting by Thomas Worlidge and was used on mugs and cider jugs at Worcester and Longton Hall. George II gained in popularity following military triumphs during the Seven Years Wars and he became associated with 'The Year of Victories' in 1759 which was a turning point during the war. A similar mug printed with a portrait of George II, is discussed in Simon Spero, 18th Century English Overglaze Transfer-Printed Porcelain and Enamels from the Joseph Handley Collection, Exhibition Catalogue, 3 October - 14 October 2000, cat. no. 1.
