The shaped top above a cylinder fallfront with central roundel tableau flanked by trophies emblematic of Music and the Arts and enclosing a red leather-lined writing surface and a series of six parquetry drawers, above five further drawers decorated sans traverse on slender cabriole legs terminating in cast hairy-paw sabots, the reverse of the frieze drawer lining stamped twice 'I F GARREE'
40 in. (101 cm.) high; 36 in. (92 cm.) wide; 19½ in. (49.5 cm.) deep

Almost certainly Sotheby's London, 29 January 1960, lot 156 from where purchased by Knight Frank & Rutley on behalf of Sir Sydney Barratt, and by descent.

Specialist note

Jean-François Garre's matrise is not recorded, but he flourished during the third quarter of the 18th century.
