Specialist note
This 'Grecian' fender recalls those probably supplied by George Bullock to Matthew Robinson Boulton for Great Tew - one included in the Christie's House sale, 27-29 May 1987, lot 5, and now at Temple Newsam. As C. Wainwright suggests, although no metal fire furniture was included in the 1817 Tew bill, the basket grates correspond with a Bullock drawing (see lot 78) and indeed Bullock had a 'Brass Room' in his London workshop, whilst some fenders were included in the 1819 Bullock sale at Christie's (C. Wainwright, George Bullock, Cabinet-Maker, London, 1988, p. 94).
