8¼ x 6 3/8 in. (21.4 x 16.2 cm.); and two other head studies from the Bolognese School, 18th Century (3)

A. Maggiori (L. 3005b), his attribution 'G. Reni fece' (recto) and his inscription 'Studio per la testa del S. Francesco dipinto da Guido nella cappella Borghesi. Io Aless. Maggiori comprai in Bologna il giorno 8 nov. del 1790' (on the verso).

Specialist note

As noted by Maggiori, the present drawing is related to the head of Saint Francis, frescoed in the Cappella Paolina (also known as the Cappella Borghese) in S. Maria Maggiore, Rome, as part of Reni's series The Miracles and Triumphs of the Virgin (1611-12; see D.S. Pepper, Guido Reni: A complete catalogue of his works with an introductory text, Oxford, 1984, fig. 56).
