Specialist note
The Cottage Palace Service was originally commissioned around 1830 for 'Alexandria', the summer residence of Emperor Nicholas I at Peterhof. The private estate was later given by the Emperor to his wife Alexandra Feodorovna. The shield motif, reflecting the Gothic taste of the time, was designed by V. Zhukovskii and was inspired by the Magic of the White Rose festival, dedicated to the birthday of the Prussian-born Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, which took place 13 July 1829 at Sanssousi in Potsdam.
