Note du spécialiste

The picture can be compared to Lesire's signed A Scholar at work in a private collection (see W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schü ler, Landau, 1983, III, p. 1714, cat. 1144, plate 1725). The composition of the present lot is a variation on Rembrandt's depiction of the same subject in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

We are grateful to Dr. David de Witt (Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen's University, Kingston) for his help in cataloguing this lot.
